supervisors approve complex

Richard Halstead
07/30/2008

Marin supervisors this week approved a plan to construct a $109 million public safety complex, but ultimately it may be up to voters to determine where the structures will be built.
The plan approved Tuesday calls for the phased construction of two public safety buildings totaling 83,000 square feet and a 7,453-square-foot ancillary building on the east side of the Marin Civic Center, where a dog park and petanque court are situated. The new building would protect sheriff's dispatchers, emergency radio operations and the county's computer servers in a major disaster.

nalle winery

yet another wine/pétanque venue...

Dry Creek Valley: The Mother Lode of Zinfandel

“I think people recognize that we have enough Syrah in Dry Creek Valley now. As for the future, there’s just no way Zinfandel will ever be eclipsed here.”
~ Doug Nalle

by
Thom Elkjer August 11, 2006

Doug Nalle has been making wine in
Dry Creek Valley for more than 20 years. After starting in the wine business as a cellar rat in 1973, he earned a Masters in enology from UC Davis in 1979 and dedicated himself to winemaking. He launched his own label in the mid-1980s, then became founding winemaker at Quivira estate winery on West Dry Creek Road. Today Nalle concentrates on Nalle Winery, a family operation that he shares with his wife, Lee, and their son (and assistant winemaker), Andrew. Lee’s family also grows grapes in Dry Creek Valley that go into Nalle wines.
Appellation America is proud to feature
Nalle Winery’s outstanding Dry Creek Zin and other varietals in our online wine store."Wine Makes You Smart" You can easily identify Nalle wines in stores (or on the next table at a restaurant) because of the “family crest” with the Latin motto vinum sapientiam tibi dat – “Wine Makes You Smart.” On the back label? Wry wine cartoons, also in an archaic wood-cut style. For all his humor, Nalle is a serious observer of the wine scene and often one of the first to note when the pendulum has swung too far in any direction. He calls himself a “contrarian” but it might be more accurate to call him a bellwether.

Thom Elkjer: Nalle Winery has both a horseshoe pitch and a pétanque court. One’s “All-American” and one’s “Très Francais”. This looks like your Zin/Pinot paradox all over again, but with projectiles.

Doug Nalle: My wife and I like Europe and spend some time in France, and we think pétanque is a cool game! I like horseshoes too, and if you think about it, most of a horseshoe area is just empty space you throw the horseshoes over, so we put the pétanque court right there and got a kind of two-for-one deal.

portland pétanque

Here is a nice recap and photos from last weekend's NW Regional Doubles in Portland . Thanks to Joe Martin, Albyn Jones, Philippe Agnesse and all at the Portland Petanque Club who helped put on another nice event.
Congratulations to gold medalists Joe and Pierre Brun, along with the other top finishers as noted down below.

cheers,

Ed Porto
FPUSA National Sport Director

P.S. Don't forget about our last NW Regional of the season: the very first NW Regional Mixed Triplette to be held on Sunday, September 21st and hosted by La Petanque Mariniere in San Rafael California . 'Hope to see you there!

W
e have two tournaments to summarize, Saturday's doubles melêe and Sunday's NW Region Doubles. The complimentary pastries from La Petite Provence and the "bottomless coffee cup' brought sixteen players out early Saturday morning to be matched up for a day of doubles. It was as close to perfect weather as one could imagine, sunny, and not too hot.

Because we had a perfect number for 8 teams, we went with a round robin format, and each team that was formed by having players draw numbered tiles, played every other team, 7 games in 8 hours including a break for lunch. Can't be much doubt then about which is the best team on that day.By the end of the day, the first place winners were Charles (from San Diego ) and Antrenick (sp?) Zadayan, father and son, who happened to be paired by the drawing as a team, won 6 of their 7 games. They were followed by Albyn Jones and Gary Bigham in 2nd, Matt Sharp and Thai Nguyen in 3rd, and Duong Nguyen and yours truly in 4th place. Each of the winning players received a bottle of the best wine $5 can buy, and the first three teams also were handed what amounted to coffee and donut money as a cash prize that came from entry fees.

The Northwest Regional Doubles took place on Sunday July 27th on a genuine Portland summer day: a bit cloudy, a few drops of rain, but with a very nice finish. After a delicious course of pastries provided by La Petite Provence, (sibling of "La Provence , the big") the competition began. 13 teams from Oregon and Washington , plus one from Salt Lake City Utah , played three rounds of a Swiss system in the morning to qualify teams to the concours and consolante. For lunch we had sandwiches provided by La Provence Bakery and Bistro. After lunch, Joe Martin and Pierre Brun went on a rampage, defeating Philippe and Pierre Agnesse 13-12, then Dick Viskov and John Hunt 13-0, and finally Bob and Joe Cortright in the final by 15-3. The Viskov/Hunt team took third place by defeating John Chantavisay and Duong Nguyen.Albyn Jones and David Johnstone defeated Greg Conyers and Lee Harris in a closely contested match to take the honors in the consolante final. We finished off the day with a wonderful banquet (Thanks to Didier Blanc Gonnet and Pascal Tisseur of La Provence !), awards, and then another round or two of friendly boules for those who didn't want to see the end of a great weekend of petanque! Many and profound thanks to the volunteers who helped make it happen.

The concours winners were:
1st: Joe Martin and Pierre Brun
2nd: Joe Cortright and Bob Cortright
3rd: Dick Viskov and John Hunt
4th: John Chantivisay and Duong Nguyen

The consolante winners were:
1st: Albyn Jones and David Johnstone
2nd: Creg Conyers and Lee Harris

Longest Trip Prize:
Michael Kronenberg and Jean-Jacque Grossi who came all the way from Utah to participate! Albyn awarded each a special bottle of vintage "Vin de Petanque" from his cellar.

Thanks go to the FPUSA for adding $100 to the cash prize purse that was shared by all the winners on Sunday.

From your tournament directors this past weekend,

Albyn and Joe.

better than sex...

...or things to do in New York City during 100 days without sex.

Day 17: Playing pétanque at Bryant Park is BTS

Civilization, Freud would have you believe, would not exist without the sublimation of our erotic impulses into more productive realms. Had our forebears simply decided to bang like rabbits 24/7, we would still be cave-dwelling barbarians stuck in hunting-and-gathering mode. Although they celebrated sex and sexuality in a frank, voracious way, the ancient Greeks did manage to skip an orgy or two to pen The Odyssey, mount the world’s first Olympic games and erect architectural marvels like The Parthenon. Reportedly a virgin his whole life, Antoni Gaudi – whose art nouveau masterpieces are sprinkled all over Barcelona – would not have been able to conceive a Sagrada Familia half as extraordinary if he did so in the missionary position...more

Gentle image of pétanque wrecked by ‘bouliganes’

Insults and punches are flying in the world of pétanque, the French pastime that conjures up images of elderly men, pastis and afternoons under the plane trees of Provence.
As the sport celebrates its centenary this month, the authorities in south and central France are clamping down on physical and verbal abuse among players that is said to be caused by prize money, alcohol and the decline of civil behaviour in France...

pétanque des écoles

French American International School

Pétanque is a French recreational game and sport which can be played almost anywhere and by anyone and is spreading very fast worldwide. In our school, pétanque is played regularly all year round at school events, as part of the French culture. Parents and kids can learn how to play the game or practice at the annual Lower School Parent Association picnic. Kids can play it at the lunch break during the annual Olympiades. The Middle School is now offering an initiation class in the PE program.
To raise some money for the school, purchase pétanque boules through
Petanque America . 10% of all sales will be donated back to the school. All proceeds benefit the French American and International French tuition assistance.
The annual tournament Pétanque des Ecoles takes place every spring in Marin, in collaboration
with
Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley and Lycée Lapérouse. For more information contact Christine Lemor-Drake Christine@appletopomme.com

modesto pétanque

It may be an old article, yet may be new news to those of us who missed it...

Pétanque Courts Installed in Beyer Community Park

City of Modesto, California Press Release
November 30, 2005

The City of Modesto recently completed the installation of two Pétanque (pronounced "pay-tonk") courts at the Beyer Community Park located on Sylvan Avenue. Crews from the City’s Park Services and Maintenance Division worked with local volunteers to renovate two former horseshoe pits into the Pétanque courts.
Pétanque, one of Europe's most popular outdoor games, originated in Provence in the early 1900s and is a distant cousin of horseshoes and a close relative of bocce. It is played on hard packed dirt using small wood and metal balls. The City of Modesto’s courts were the result of collaborating with local residents who had expressed an interest in building a Pétanque court and bringing the game of Pétanque to Modesto. Previously, one had to travel to Sacramento or Oakhurst to play the game.
The courts, now open, are located near the skate park in Beyer Park, located on Sylvan Avenue, adjacent to Beyer High School. For more information, contact Loren Holt at (209) 571-5573 or email:

Circa 1914. Open year-round, Relais du Soleil means a place to rest in the sun, and this guest ranch on 120 park-like acres in Glen Ellen, California perfectly reflects its French name. Enjoy the casual ambiance and gorgeous scenery in Nuns Canyon at the foot of Mayacamas mountain range. Shade trees accent the deck next to Calabazas Creek. Play horseshoes, darts, croquet or petanque. Sit and stargaze or birdwatch. Stay in an upstairs guest bedroom in the main house or the three-room cottage called the Bunkhouse Suite. Feel welcomed by fresh flowers and a glass of champagne upon arrival. A full ranch breakfast is served on the patio or in the dining room. Take a wine-tasting tour of the nearby Sonoma Valley vineyards.

Seven years ago Bridie Nicholson was chronically ill and had lived on daily insulin injections for almost 30 years. But the liver and pancreas gave her a new lease of life that she has grabbed with both hands...

shipbuilding, pétanque...

By Barr Seitz , July 19 2008

On October 8, 1988, the people of La Ciotat, a Mediterranean town not far from Marseilles, gathered around their port. They had come to watch the launching of Le Montere , a 100,000 ton oil tanker. The priest blessed the ship, the mayor made a speech and the massive ship churned out to sea, marking the end of four centuries of shipbuilding...

aoyama pétanque, japan

Aoyama Pétanque was formed out of an informal group of multi-national pétanque enthusiasts who make Aoyama Park their home ground for exiting boules action combined with good wine and food.
The informality in which the group was set up is still an important element for all of Aoyama Pétanque members, although the group does now act like a club in matters such as selection of teams to compete in petanque tournaments, organizing tournaments and training sessions or sponsorship of other events to promote petanque. Since September 2006, Aoyama Pétanque is a fully registered club with the Japan Pétanque Boules Union - JPBU organization.

bastille day in brooklyn

One of the most exciting days of the year in Brooklyn is when Bar Tabac trucks in mounds of sand to hold its annual Pétanque Tournament. Now in its seventh year, over 80 teams flew in from all over the world to compete (the game is very similar to bocce) and the streets are opened to pedestrian life.
It's not just the action and attraction of the tournament that makes it special. People lounge about, eat great culinary delights, kids skateboard, friends play foosball, and listen to great music - the kinds of things that we need to happen more to make the sometimes hectic, noisy streets of NYC more palatable. If livable streets advocates are looking for a good model of what draws people to an event, look no further.

Thanks to Streetfilms

play pétanque on-line

Visit the side-bar for a new feature of the LPM blog.... on-line pétanque. The throw of the cochonnet and boule is controlled by placing the cursor over them, clicking left while pulling pulling back, then letting go. When you pull back, an arrow juts out from in front of the player indicating the trajectory. Moving the cursor at this point allows for a change of trajectory, ie. the left-handed players throw better when aimed slightly to the right. A Jouer!

i want some boules....

but how do i know which size and weight are good for me?

Competion boules range in different sizes from:
Weight: From 650 to 800 grams [1lb. 7oz. — 1lb. 12oz.]
Diameter: From 70.5 to 80.0mm [2.78" — 3.15"]

A player who specializes in pointing (or placing) should normally favor a small, heavy boule. A heavy boule is slightly more difficult to displace, and a boule of the minimum allowable diameter presents a smaller target to the opposition's shooters. Women and young boys, usually having smaller hands and less arm strength, frequently compromise by selecting a boule that is both light and small.
A shooter should choose a lighter boule for the best chance of success. This may seem surprising, but in fact the decreased momentum of a light boule gives it the best chance of remaining in place after knocking an opponent's boule out of the game (the perfect, and much admired, shot known as a carreau ). A shooter should not use a small boule: a shot that just barely misses with a small boule might have been effective if only that extra 5 mm had been on the radius!

In choosing a boule, however, perhaps the overriding consideration is "play with what feels comfortable to you."

If you should desire to try different boules, before you make you decision, please contact a director or club member.

july 12th tournament

It was a perfect day for a casual pétanque tournament. The weather was extremely favorable. Not too hot, yet not too cold. At registration time, we were a bit worried as to having enough players to hold the tournament, but sure enough, we attained our desired goal of players. Among them being two new members. LPM would like to welcome Monte, and Mina to the club. Both seemed to be very excited about their entry into the club.
Monte played with Christine, and Mina played with JP.
All appeared to have a nice time, and we hope to see them often on the courts.

Don't foget the next tournament on August 10 --

pétanque wines

Recently Michel-Schlumberger Wine Estate built a Pétanque court and launched it with a Pétanque party. They have a Pétanque Court available for visitors. They encourage people visiting the area to come by, enjoy wines and play a game on the court with views of their organic garden and vineyards. If they come on Friday nights they can listen to the live music we have playing in the courtyard while they play pétanque out back. In addition they now have two wines called pétanque viognier and pétanque syrah. The Sryah is not yet released. The Viognier was at the party on May 24th. If any of you or your club members are interested in purchasing, we would extend to you a special 20% case discount.

kiwis triumph

a big thanks to chef Frank and his crew!

While I was not able to participate in the main event, I did have the pleasure of playing with and against several of our New Zealand friends during the Saturday games, and watch the competition on Sunday. It was a most delightful weekend. As you have already heard - the Kiwis took first place - but we made them work for it! I want to say 'Thank You' to the hard-working VOMPC members who did a fabulous job and also a big thanks to the Marin crew who went into action when the thirsty, hungry boulists descended upon our not-yet-ready aperitif table. Here are a few photos from the awards ceremony. Christine Cragg

they play boule and they sing great too!

great job Ed!

leadership

Nowadays, with the elections around the corner, leadership, or the lack thereof, is a word which has been freely tossed back and forth between the Republicans and the Democrats.
But leadership doesn’t only apply to politics. It encompasses just about every facet of our lives.

First of all, what is a leader? The Mirriam-Webster dictionary says that it is “a party member chosen to manage party activities in a legislative body”.

All right, but what is a good leader?

In my opinion, it is a person who leads by consensus and by example. It is a person who wouldn’t ask others to do something that he/she wouldn’t personally do. It is also a person who would listen to others and can be persuaded to change his/her mind if a consensus (contrary to his/her beliefs) is reached.
And such a person in my opinion is Christine Cragg, our club president.
I have known Christine for over 3 years now, and my admiration for her has not dwindled but increased. Because you have to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar!

Christine has been involved in every crusade, in every fight, in every task which would benefit our club. When few people volunteer to clean up our field, she is there, when we need somebody to represent and speak for our club, she is there, when paperwork needs to be done, she is there, when petition signatures need to be collected, she is there, when purchases need to be done, she is there. She is always “sur la brèche”.

And besides club activities, she is also involved in functions too numerous to mention. I have often told her to slow down, but she won’t have any of this.

She also has as we say in French “le cœur sur la main”, wearing her heart on her sleeves. She is very emotional and can cry at the drop of a hat, but it denotes a good heart. She is in my mind, somebody who would like animals, and anybody who likes animals has the heart in the right place.

It is for all those reasons, and also for the fact that we seldom have the audacity to praise somebody publicly, that I felt compelled to write this little piece.

Here is to you Christine! Na sdarovia! In my book, you are tops!

thoughts from ed porto

Hi All,

The format for the NZ/US competition was devised by NZ Sport Director and their "Team Selector" for this trip, Murray Porter. Murray was a member of New Zealand's National Team last September at the World Championship in Thailand. We got to know each other a bit at the Singapore International the week before the WC, and then in Thailand. He suggested the idea and I was surprised that it came to fruition so quickly. The format is a good one. It places emphasis on group achievement and team spirit. It is used annually for the Australia-New Zealand 60+ series, and perhaps other events. I was just following orders, so to speak. What made the format appear complex (and gave me a few headaches) is that we had a lot more players than New Zealand did.Why so? I wanted to keep the event as open as possible, to give every member a chance to participate. The way I saw it, our 60+ group contains a lot of loyal long-time members of the FPUSA. Their dues have kept the organization going through thick and thin over the years, sending teams to the World Championship, paying all sorts of expenses, not least of which was the malicious lawsuit that threatened FPUSA's existence a couple of years ago. This was our Seniors' chance to play petanque against members from another Federation, and a chance for FPUSA to give something to them in return for their support. Although things did not go perfectly, I have no regrets about including all who registered on time and came to play. I had composed teams in advance but, faced with a no-show and a few drop outs (for heat and health reasons), I had to do a fair amount of shifting around to replace players in different slots. Both days were special events for petanque in the Bay Area and the U.S. It was suggested to me that FPUSA should look into having special competitions for its Seniors --- a worthy idea that I will look into for 2009. The Kiwis do it. So maybe we can give it a try. Thanks to everyone who came and participated. And apologies to those who would have liked to have played another game or two but could not. Everyone seemed to "get the picture," that is, this was a (big) team effort and even those on the sidelines were part of the team. Special thanks goes to Dave Riffo, Frank Pipal, Laura Anderson, Carol Davis, Antonia Chavez, Teri Sirico and Christine Cragg, for all their efforts before and throughout the weekend. To Arbitre Extaordinaire Antonio Lofaro, and to the VOM and LPM Boards of Directors, as well as everyone who spontaneously pitched in to help make this event such a great success!

Until the next time,
Ed Porto

kiwis triumph in sonoma

It seemed that players and spectators alike, all had an enjoyable time yesterday in Sonoma as the 24 member New Zealand contingent, uniformly attired in their snappy pétanque shirts, took on the Americans in the 60 and over tournament. The weather was spectacular and all were in good spirits. Unfortunately for the Americans, victory was not to be ours, yet the loss did little to dampen the enthusiasm and enjoyment of a wonderful group of people getting together to play pétanque. It was quite something to realise that such a large group of players travelled so far to play pétanque with us. Thank you, Kiwis, you were all a delight. La Pétanque Marinière wishes you a pleasant stay in California. Also a big thanks to Frank Pipal, chef extrodinaire, for slaving over the delicious paella dinner. The Valley of the Moon pétanque club is to be commended for co-hosting such a warm and hospitable affair.
